NNL welcomes appointment of Ann Cormack as Non-Executive Director
National Nuclear Laboratory (NNL) welcomes the announcement that Ann Cormack has been appointed as Non-Executive Director (NED), replacing Claire Flint on the NNL Board from 21 April 2023.
Since 2017 Ann has been a Council Member and Trustee of leading international affairs think tank Chatham House, where she held the interim Chair post of the NomCo.
Ann has a wealth of experience, serving on the Audit & Risk Committee for the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) between 2011-2019 before becoming NED the following year. She was also Council Member for the British Institute of Energy Economics, appointed as Vice Chair and Chair between the period of 2006-2007.
In her executive career, Ann was most recently Executive Head of HR for the De Beers Group, a role she held from 2017 to 2021, leading the people transformation of the global business through Covid-19. She served on the RemCo of Element 6, a synthetic diamond, cubic boron nitride producer (a joint venture of the DeBeers Group) and prior to this, worked for Rolls Royce as Director International from 2013-2017.
Ann is currently on the Board and ARAC of Envipco, a reverse vending machine manufacturer in the Netherlands which collects bottles and cans, repaying the deposit to the customer to encourage recycling to promote sustainability. Just recently, she was elected to the Business Committee of the General Council of the University of Edinburgh, her alma mater.
Dr Paul Howarth, Chief Executive Officer at NNL, said: “It’s fantastic to have Ann joining the NNL Board. Our forward strategy is moving in an exciting direction and her dossier of experience in the international affairs and energy spheres will be a pivotal asset to fulfil our purpose as a national laboratory.
“This comes at an exciting time, with the announcement of further investment into the nuclear sector from UK government’s Spring Budget. I’d also like to extend my thanks from NNL to Claire – whose contribution in the role has been greatly appreciated over the last six years.”
On her appointment, Ann Cormack, said: “I am delighted to be joining the Board of NNL at such an important time. As nuclear enjoys a renaissance, the growth opportunities in all markets are inspiring, and NNL’s leading expertise is in greater demand than ever.

Cindy Rampersaud has been
appointed as a Non-Executive Member (NEM) and Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee (ARC) of the UK Health Security Agency for 3 years from 3 April 2023.
The appointment will involve a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £13,137 per annum. This appointment is made in accordance with the Cabinet Office Code of Governance for Public Appointments.

Defra Ministers have appointed Mel Austen, Lynn Dicks and Dame Caroline Spelman as Natural England board members. These appointments are for a three-year term and will run from 1 March 2023 for Lynn Dicks and Dame Caroline Spelman, and 1 April 2023 for Mel Austen.
Board members play an important role in providing leadership for the organisation, ensuring the delivery of Natural England’s mission to build partnerships for Nature recovery, in support for the Environmental Improvement Plan. This includes setting strategy and direction, agreeing objectives, overseeing performance and taking important decisions such as designations.
The appointments were made in accordance with the Governance Code on Public Appointments published by the Cabinet Office. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.

Imperial War Museum

Suzanne Raine has been reappointed as a Trustee of the Imperial War Museum for a second term by the Rt Hon James Cleverley MP, Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
The Imperial War Museum (IWM) is dedicated to recording people’s experiences of modern conflict, exploring the causes of war and its impact on people’s lives. It provides for, and encourages, the study and understanding of the history of modern war and ‘wartime experience’. The IWM is an exempt charity and an executive non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, with two Trustees appointed by the Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs.
The appointment is for four years, with effect from 31 December 2021, having been applied retrospectively to account for an extension to Suzanne’s initial term. Suzanne will also serve on the IWM Audit Committee.
Suzanne is a Visiting Professor at King’s College London and works at the Centre for Geopolitics at Cambridge University. She served in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office from 1995 to 2018, finishing in the role of Director for Counter Terrorism. Her previous roles include Head of the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre and Head of Counter Terrorism policy.

Gardner reappointed as Independent Members of Digital Health and Care Wales
(DHCW).
Role of Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW)
DHCW is responsible for ensuring the delivery of first-class digital health
and care services enabling effective, efficient and safer decision-making
through the provision of access to content-rich, person-focused health and
care data and information.
A Healthier Wales sets out the Welsh Government’s commitment to
significantly increase investment in digital Health and Care. This will be a
key part of transforming our health and social care system in Wales. A
Healthier Wales acknowledges the significant challenge of driving digital
change at pace and scale. It identifies priority areas for investment,
describes a new ‘open platform’ approach to digital innovation, and
recognises the need to strengthen national leadership and delivery
arrangements.
Role of Independent
Members
Independent Members of the Board are responsible for:
· establishing and taking forward the
strategic aims and objectives of DHCW consistent with its overall purpose and
within the policy and resources framework determined by the Minister for
Health and Social Services;
· contributing to the work of the Board, based
upon their independence, past experience and knowledge, and ability to stand
back from the day-to dayoperational management;
· analysing and critically reviewing complex
information and contributing to sound decision-making, ensuring the decisions
are open and transparent;
· ensuring compliance with any statutory or
administrative requirements in respect of the use of public funds and
legislation relevant to the organisation;
· ensuring the organisation operates within
the limits of its statutory authority and any delegated authority agreed with
Welsh Government, and in accordance with any other conditions relating to the
use of public funds and legislative requirements
· ensuring that, in reaching decisions, it
takes into account guidance issued by the Welsh Government;
· ensuring that it receives, reviews and
scrutinises regularly, financial information concerning the management of
DHCW;
· ensuring that it is informed in a timely
manner about any concerns as to the activities of DHCW and that, where
applicable, it provides positive assurance to the Minister for Health and
Social Services, via the Health and Social Services Group that appropriate
remedial action has been taken to address any such concerns;
· demonstrating high standards of corporate
governance at all times, including by using appropriate Committees to help
the Board to receive assurance and address key financial and other risks;
· ensuring a positive culture and promote the
values and standards of conduct for the organisation and staff; and
· working closely with NHS bodies, the public,
private and third sector organisations, making sure that the views of
patients, carers and families are fully involved in helping to shape, develop
and improve services.
Term of Reappointment
The Minister for
Health and Social Services has agreed to reappoint Marian Wyn Jones and Rowan
Gardner as Independent Members of Digital Health and Care Wales (DHCW) for 4
years from 1st April 2023.

As a former Commonwealth Scholar myself (UK to Australia), I have a long term commitment to upholding the values of the Commonwealth and to ensuring that CSC continues to play an important role in the UK's development aid strategy, helping to build a safer, healthier and more prosperous world. As a barrister, I have a particular commitment to upholding the rule of law and promoting good governance. I have served as Chair of the Board of Scrutiny of Cambridge University and PVC of an Australian university. I am currently a Tribunal Judge, Chairman of the Plant Varieties and Seeds Tribunal, Governing Master of the Bench of Inner Temple (Inn of Court for barristers), Academic Governor of the Inns of Court College of Advocacy, member of the UK Committee on Radioactive Waste Management, member of the UK Agricultural and Horticultural Board and member of the Architects Registration Board Prescription Committee. Earlier in my career, I worked with the United Nations, the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank throughout Africa, Asia and the Pacific.

I am Professor of Ecology and Catchment Management at Bangor University. I have been an active researcher in international environmental issues for over 25 years, with broad research expertise in forest restoration through fallow management. I have field experience in 14 countries across Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Dr. Christine Thuranira-McKeever
Vice-Principal, Equality, Diversity and Inclusion and Director of Distance Learning, Royal Veterinary College (RVC), University of London
In my role, I work with post graduate students from around the world and have supported many cohorts of Commonwealth Scholars over the last ten years. As part of this work, I also regularly engage with institutions in the global south to create partnerships to support students and in so doing, help strengthen their institutional capacity. My academic background is in agricultural economics and I spent the early part of my career working in international development.
Professor Sarah Hawkes
Professor of Global Health, University College London
I am Professor of Global Public Health at UCL and co-chair of the Lancet Commission on Gender and Global Health. I undertake research on the evidence-to-policy process and work with both the multilateral systems and national governments to promote gender-responsive policies to improve health.
