Rt Hon Catherine McKinnell – Minister for School Standards
Introduction from the Chair
Dear Applicant,
Thank you for your interest in the School Teachers’ Review Body or ‘STRB’.
Our role is to make recommendations to Ministers on matters relating to the pay and conditions of school teachers. In recent years, we have been asked to make recommendations about pay awards and to advise on reforms to pay and conditions to raise the status of the profession and support the recruitment and retention of high-quality classroom teachers and school leaders.
The members of the STRB consider it a privilege to serve and make a difference in this important public appointment. We are well supported in this role. We receive written and oral evidence from the government and organisations representing the teacher workforce and its employers. We also visit schools and local authorities to develop our understanding of issues facing teachers and school leadership teams. STRB members work as a team to assess and, as appropriate, challenge evidence from the government and others and to develop coherent recommendations on the teachers’ pay system. We submit our reports to the Prime Minister and Secretary of State for Education.
What could you contribute to the STRB? We are an inclusive team and would like to hear from potential members from a wide range of backgrounds. We are looking for specialist skills and experience including education, labour markets, economics, HR and pay specialists, and of managing change in complex organisations. This is an opportunity to put these skills to use to serve others. As a team, we work in a multi-disciplinary and cooperative way – so you will need to be constructive, adaptable and enjoy communicating. In my view, most important is the commitment to public service, listening carefully to a wide range of views and inputs and then being brave about our recommendations.
I do hope you are excited by the challenges this opportunity presents and that you will be inspired to apply.
Dr Mike Aldred
Chair of the STRB
