By Royal Warrant, His Majesty King Charles III has appointed Arthur “Jo” Bradwell as a Non-Executive Commissioner to the Forestry Commission.

Jo Bradwell has been appointed for a three-year term, which commenced on 19 February 2024.

The Forestry Commission (FC) is a non-Ministerial Government department that has a key role in helping the Government achieve its tree planting objectives and is responsible for protecting, expanding and promoting the sustainable management of woodlands in society and the environment. The Non-Executive Commissioners play a pivotal role in establishing a strong, sustainable future for the organisation.

This appointment has been made in accordance with the Ministerial Governance Code on Public Appointments. All appointments have been made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.

Biographical details

Jo Bradwell DSc, FICFor, is owner and director of Norbury Park. He has been instrumental in setting up the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research (BIFoR) which has worked towards increasing woodland cover and transforming farmland crops to mob grazing with cattle. He was also the winner of the 2018 Royal Forestry Society Sylva trophy and the 2018 Peter Savill award.

Non-Executive Director of the DHSC Departmental Board

Following the conclusion of recruitment for new non-executive members to the board of the Department of Health and Social Care, Richard Douglas and Steve Rowe have been appointed for 3 years from 7 March 2024. The appointments are remunerated at a rate of £15,000 a year for a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month.

Richard Douglas will take on the role of Chair of the board’s Audit and Risk Committee from 1 August 2024, at which point his role will also be remunerated at a rate of £20,000 a year.

The appointment of Gerry Murphy as Non-Executive Member and Chair of the board’s Audit and Risk Committee has been extended from 1 February 2024 until 31 July 2024. The appointment will continue to be remunerated at a rate of £20,000 a year, for a time commitment of 2 to 3 days per month.

These appointments are made in accordance with the Cabinet Office Code of Governance for Public Appointments. The regulation of public appointments against the requirements of the Code is carried out by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

The appointments are made on merit and political activity played no part in the decision process. However, in accordance with the Code, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. None of the appointees have declared any political activity.

Lead Non-Executive Director of the DHSC Departmental Board

Following the conclusion of recruitment for Lead Non-Executive Member to the board of the Department of Health and Social Care, Samantha Jones, a serving non-executive member, will take on the role for the remainder of her term ending on 13 February 2026.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has today (3 April) announced the appointment of Graeme Jack and Glen Nimmo as Board members to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

Their terms will run from 1 April and 10 April respectively, each for a period of three years. Glen Nimmo will also take on the role of Pork Sector Council Chair for three years.

Graeme Jack brings more than 30 years of experience in the agri-food sector, including as Communications Director for Müller UK & Ireland, whilst Glen Nimmo has previously worked in a family-run multi-site integrated pork processing business, covering slaughter, primal processing and retail packing.

These are Ministerial appointments, made by Defra Ministers, with the approval of Ministers in the Scottish Government, Welsh Government, and the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland. The appointments are made in accordance with the Governance Code on Public Appointments published by the Cabinet Office. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process.

Senior Salaries Review Body - Member campaign

Government has made two new appointments at a variety of levels to join the Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB).

The SSRB provides independent advice to the Prime Minister and senior ministers on the pay of many of the nation’s top public servants.

The appointment process for these roles was in full accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice.

Mark Polin OBE is a newly appointed board member who will serve a three year term commencing March 2024.

Mark’s career has predominantly been in policing, and was Chief Constable of North Wales Police before retiring in 2018. He was previously Chair of the Health Board for North Wales.

David Stanton is also a newly appointed board member who will serve a three year term commencing March 2024.

David is Sub-Dean and Canon Treasurer at Westminster Abbey Abbey, as well as a Distinguished Friend of Oxford University, Governor at both Westminster School and Westminster University. He is an Independent Member of the Public Services Honours Committee.

Gary Kildare was first appointed as a lay member of the Legal Services Board on 1 April 2021.

The Lord Chancellor has approved the reappointment of Dr Gary Kildare for 4 years from 1 April 2025, as a lay member of the Legal Services Board (LSB).

Dr Gary Kildare is the former Chief HR Officer Europe and Global Head of Labour Relations for the IBM Corporation. He is also: a Non-Executive Director (NED) to the Insolvency Service; a NED for the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (MOD) and Chair of the People Committee; a board member of the British Quality Foundation; an Independent Non-Executive for Crowe UK LLP a leading Tax and Advisory Services firm; a member of The Court of Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh and; a Board Advisor and mentor for Criticaleye Network of Leaders.

Gary is a Chartered Fellow of the Institute of Personnel and Development, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and a visiting professor in Business at Edinburgh Napier Business School.

LSB is the independent body overseeing the regulation of lawyers in England and Wales. Its goal is to reform and modernise the legal services marketplace by putting the interests of consumers at the heart of the system. It is independent of government and the legal profession and oversees the approved regulators which themselves regulate lawyers.
