Nigel Topping CMG appointed as the Climate Change
Committee’s (CCC) permanent chair.
Nigel Topping is appointed as the CCC’s permanent chair,
following the decision of the UK and devolved governments.
This is following a competitive recruitment process in line
with the Governance Code for Public Appointments. The Government has also
considered the recommendations of the Energy Security and Net Zero and
Environmental Audit Select Committees, who conducted a pre-appointment hearing
with the candidate on 16 July. The ESNZ Committee report states they found
Nigel Topping “appointable as Chair and endorse the Government’s decision.”
The decision-making parties for this appointment were the
Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero Ed Miliband MP, the Cabinet
Secretary for Climate Action and Energy in Scottish Government Gillian Martin
MSP, the Cabinet Secretary for Climate Change and Rural Affairs in Welsh
Government Huw Irranca-Davies MS, and the Minister for Agriculture, Environment
and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland Andrew Muir MLA.
The CCC is the independent advisory body on climate to UK
Government and devolved governments established by the Climate Change Act
2008.The CCC reports to the UK Parliament, Scottish Parliament, Welsh
Parliament and the Northern Ireland Assembly on progress made in reducing
greenhouse gas emissions and adapting to the impacts of climate change.
Nigel Topping will assume his role as chair on 23 July for a
period of five years.
