Blair McDougall MP
Minister for Small Business and Economic Transformation
Appointment description
As Chair of Companies House, you will be instrumental in guiding the Board through this pivotal period of change and looking ahead to how the organisation can best make use of its powers and data to tackle economic crime.
The Board currently comprises a mix of Executive and Non-Executive Directors and is advisory rather than fiduciary. Its principal roles are to ensure challenge of the executive team on behalf of ministers and DBT, to set the organisation’s strategic direction and to oversee its operational effectiveness. In-between Board meetings, meetings occur between the executives and NEDs on specific areas of business, to provide more challenge, assurance and support.
The Chair will be responsible for:
- Providing leadership and support to the Executive Team, to ensure that Companies House delivers its objectives, provides an excellent service to end users, and supports a healthy and thriving business environment.
- Effective, cooperative, and inclusive leadership of the Board so that it sets clear strategic direction, enables robust challenge and discussion, and ensures decisions are clear, timely, and aligned with organisational goals.
- Championing Companies House as a world-leading corporate registry, identifying new opportunities for Companies House to make use of its data and powers to tackle economic crime, and strengthening relationships with other government departments and agencies.
- Supporting the government’s growth agenda by supporting legitimate businesses and demonstrating efficiencies.
- Acting as the point of communication between the Companies House Main Board and the Responsible Minister.
Organisation description
About Companies House:
Companies House is a cornerstone of corporate governance in the UK, playing a vital role in maintaining the integrity and transparency of the UK business environment. Our register holds essential data on UK companies, their directors, and their financial accounts. This information:
- Informs business decisions
- Drives corporate transparency
- Supports economic growth.
Last financial year alone, Companies House handled over 1.5million incorporations and dissolutions, and the value of our register to UK businesses is estimated at up to £3billion annually.
We are undergoing the most significant reform programme since we were established in the 19th century. In 2023, the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act was passed, granting us new powers to:
- Detect and address suspicious activity, to prevent companies and others from carrying out or facilitating unlawful activities
- Improve transparency over UK companies and other legal entities to strengthen our business environment, support our national security, and disrupt economic crime.
This is a significant expansion of the role of Companies House, transforming from a passive register to an active gatekeeper over company registrations and a custodian of reliable data.
In parallel, we are in the process of modernising our underlying systems and processes to:
- Leverage the full use of digital tools and cutting age data analytics to maximise the value of the data on our register; and
- Strengthen our ability to deliver both our core services and our new powers.
Taken together, this is a substantial and far-reaching reform programme which will enable Companies House to play a leading role in the fight against corrupt business practices, providing the transparency and clarity necessary for the UK to continue to be regarded as a world-leading place to do business.

The main board of Companies House currently consists of the following non-executive director members alongside members of the executive team:
