Essential criteria for all roles:
A broad understanding of the civil justice system.
The ability to adopt a collaborative approach in contributing, at a strategic level, to complex issues.
The ability to represent a sector or interest within the civil justice system and to speak with authority either as an expert or experienced practitioner.
Effective interpersonal and communication skills in a committee setting.
A strong and visible passion and commitment to the improvement of the civil justice system.
Member role specific essential criteria
Candidates must also be able to demonstrate the professional expertise relevant to the particular role:
Consumer:
Demonstrable engagement with key consumer advice sector stakeholders.
Be experienced in all aspects of consumer redress and have a practical understanding of the different avenues of redress available in court with the ability to identify relevant stakeholders from the consumer sector to feed into the Council’s work.
Academic:
A demonstrable interest or research in the field of civil justice.
Evidence of additional work outside of their core role (e.g. leading university pro bono clinics).
Welsh interests:
Demonstrable ability to represent Welsh interests within civil justice and to speak with authority as an expert or experienced practitioner.
Knowledge and experience of Welsh devolved legislation and legal policy and practice.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs):
The ability to demonstrate an understanding of the interests and concerns of business and their employees in relation to the civil justice system.
Able to demonstrate significant activity and awareness in the civil justice system such as involvement in litigation or policy issues.
Insurance:
Have significant experience working in a senior practitioner role in the industry.
Be able to contribute from the perspective of the day-to-day insurance market.
Housing:
A legal representative with significant experience and an in-depth knowledge of housing law.
Desirable: A particular focus on housing possession proceedings.
Solicitor:
A practising solicitor with significant experience in a senior role.
Predominantly civil practice.
Ability to command the respect of other solicitors.
Desirable: a practice or relevant experience providing an additional perspective to the CJC. e.g. a ‘defendant’ solicitor; a public law specialist; a solicitor with experience in legal costs, in funding and/or regulation, or in commercial law.
