Vacancy Description

East Kent Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest and most complex hospital trusts in England. We have a committed workforce of nearly 9000 staff working across five hospitals as well as a range of community clinics serving a local population of 695,000. We have a reputation for delivering high quality specialist care, particularly in urology, kidney disease and vascular services, providing these to communities across the south east. With a new medical school at Canterbury we are focused on nurturing our workforce and transforming our services.

We have worked hard to ensure that we are a clinically led organisation, and all this is underpinned by our quality improvement programme.  Our ambition is to be rated as “Good” or “Outstanding” by the Care Quality Commission within three years. The challenges presented by the pandemic, requirements to improve standards of care and further integrated working with our partners across the Kent and Medway Integrated Care System (ICS) are key priorities to improve the health and wellbeing of the communities we serve and the experiences of our staff and our patients.

We are looking to appoint two new Non-Executive Director’s to join our Unitary Board. Working closely with the Trust’s Chair, Executive Directors and Non-Executive Director colleagues your role will be to help ensure that the Trust fulfils its statutory and legislative responsibilities through utilising your professional skills and perspective to add value to the governance and strategic development of the Trust, holding senior managers to account, and offering collaborative challenge and advice.

Person Specification

For the first NED role we are seeking a financially qualified individual to Chair our Finance and Performance Committee. The second NED will bring significant partnership working experience and is likely to have a strong understanding of Kent and the communities we serve. Both individuals will bring board level leadership experience, drawn from a highly regulated public facing environment.

We are looking for collaborative individuals who are progressive and values led, with a passion for transforming healthcare and an interest in establishing relationships across complex stakeholder landscapes. You will be able to provide constructive challenge as necessary and be able to satisfy yourself as to the appropriateness and integrity of the information that comes to the Board, and the efficacy of the controls and systems in place to ensure the good governance of the Trust. You will need to have a genuine commitment to patients and the promotion of excellent health and care services.

You are likely to have close links with the East Kent area and be committed to making a difference to the way healthcare is delivered to the population the Trust serves.

We are committed to equality of opportunity for all. We know that the best Boards are those that reflect the communities they serve, and therefore we would particularly welcome applications from people from the local black and minority ethnic communities, and disabled people who are under-represented in non-executive roles.

All NEDs must champion the standards of public life – by upholding the highest standards of conduct and displaying the principles of selflessness, integrity, objectivity, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership.
