Vacancy Description
The Secretary of State for Defence is seeking to recruit three members for the Defence Nuclear Safety Committee (DNSC) to provide him and senior officials in MOD with independent advice on the safety of the Defence Nuclear Programme.
There are three posts covering nuclear weapons, nuclear security and nuclear propulsion. The post holders are to provide the DNSC with expertise in nuclear technologies and the nuclear industry. As a Member of the Committee’s corresponding Subgroup the individual will be required to work as part of a team of eminent experts to scrutinise the work of the Defence contractors, MOD and the nuclear safety regulators (both statutory and Internal) in order for the Committee to gather evidence on the safety and provide any necessary advice. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the development of the Committee’s Annual Work Programme and the production of the Committee’s Annual Report
Person Specification
The role specific information and criteria are available in job descriptions and information pack for each of the three posts. Membership of the Defence Nuclear Safety Committee (DNSC) requires experience of holding a senior post in nuclear industry relevant to the specialism of the post. There are three post vacancies for (i) Nuclear Propulsion, (ii) Nuclear security and (iii) Nuclear Weapons.
Members must provide the Committee with a continued balance of skills and expertise to carry out its advisory function. A member may not necessarily held career roles in nuclear safety but might have expertise in a specialism which complements those of existing Committee members. Members are initially appointed for three years.
Members must undertake activities as part of a Committee Sub-Group following a programme of work arranged with the Department. Members must be able to undertake visits to bases with flexibility to attend dates throughout the year at a variety of defence locations nationwide.
Members must have either an understanding of nuclear weapons, nuclear security or nuclear propulsion. All Committee members must have the ability to communicate effectively and work collectively at board level.
