About the Trust
Bridgewater Community Healthcare became a Foundation Trust in 2014 and is a leading provider of a range of high quality community and specialist healthcare services across the North West of England. Almost 1.5 million adults and children benefit from these services across Halton, Oldham, St Helens and Warrington along with a community dental network in these and other locations. The Trust employs around 2,000 staff and has an income of £105m.
The majority of services are delivered in patients’ homes or at locations close to where they live, such as clinics, health centres, GP practices, community centres and schools and they are committed to working closely with other providers, communities and commissioners to improve local population health and promote wellbeing. The Trust are committed to keeping people healthier for longer and developing services to support people to live independently at home.
These are exciting times for community services following the publication of the NHS Long Term Plan. Since late 2018, the Board has undertaken a robust review of options for future service delivery, management and governance. This review has outlined a commitment to ensure that Bridgewater plays a lead role in the design and development of new models of place-based integrated care in each borough and the establishment of Local Care Organisation arrangements which will deliver the best care for patients.
The Trusts Quality and Place Strategy clearly aligns with the Long Term Plan and their delivery plans identify what needs to be done to deliver on key commissioning priorities and roll out integrated care teams as appropriate. There will also be opportunities to work more closely with GP partners and mental health services in the future development of these integrated models of sustainable healthcare.
The management and governance of community and specialist services across Boroughs involve a number of different contracts and complex arrangements and the development of integrated care is at varied stages across the footprint. The Board has identified that Bridgewater has a key role to play in driving integrated community models in Warrington and Halton and sees both as central to the Trust’s future core business. The Trust are developing a closer partnership with Warrington and Halton Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (WHH) and both organisations recognise that improvements to patient care can be accelerated through joint working on integrated care and seamless care pathways. Developments from this partnership so far include a joint Director of Workforce and Organisational Development and joint Medical Director. Further plans include the review of clinical pathways and further collaboration between corporate functions of both organisations.
Remaining services across other Boroughs will be transferred to new governance and management arrangements over the coming 18 months to two years.
The Opportunity
The Trust are now seeking to appoint a non-executive Chair, to lead their Board and Council of Governors in delivering on this strategy. The Chair will work closely with our Chief Executive and key stakeholders in shaping the future of community services and developing local care organisations and integrated care partnerships across Greater Manchester and Cheshire and Merseyside. The tenure of 12-18 months is based on our prediction of how long it will take for the new arrangements and transition to take effect but this may change over time.
Person Specification
It is essential that the Chair is able to represent the Trust across their range of partners and stakeholders, demanding a high level of personal credibility. They are seeking a strategic-minded individual with a proven track record of inspiring others and with extensive, director-level, leadership experience, whether in the public, private or voluntary sector who will bring confident, corporate and financial insight. Most importantly, you will share the Trusts values and mission to work closely with local people and partners to promote good health and to be a leading provider of excellent community healthcare services in the North West.
