Vacancy Description

These roles are an exciting opportunity to shape the social mobility agenda over the coming years. The Commissioners will be responsible for supporting the Chair in ensuring that the remit of the Commission is fulfilled fully, promptly and properly.  They will play a crucial role in realising a more defined role for the Commission in national life and in progressing the Government’s levelling-up agenda.

The Commissioners will:

  • actively engage with the business of the Commission, contributing their knowledge and experience in order to shape and enhance its work;
  • comment on and contribute to the Commission’s major research reports and publications, including its annual report which is laid before Parliament;
  • build and maintain effective working relationships with the Chair, the other Commissioners, and the Secretariat, to ensure that the Commission works effectively to fulfil its remit;
  • act as an advocate for the social mobility and the levelling up agendas, helping to drive a culture of change both within and outside government and building effective relationships with relevant stakeholders; and
  • act as a representative of the Commission, espousing its values and work.

Person Specification

All candidates must demonstrate:

  • A strong understanding of how to advance social mobility in the era of levelling up by thinking inventively about how government, business and civil society can unlock new opportunities in different areas of the UK for many more people;
  • The ability to support the Chair’s vision and agenda for change and work collegiately with the Board to deliver the Commission’s strategic objectives and act as an ambassador for the organisation;
  • An understanding of the political landscape in Great Britain and an ability to develop a strong, constructive and credible relationship with Ministers and senior Whitehall officials;
  • An understanding of the critical economic and cultural divides that have come to the fore in modern Britain and, more importantly, how to overcome them– between graduates and non-graduates; between the cities and towns; and between the nationally or internationally mobile and those more rooted in place and tradition;
  • The ability to understand and interpret financial information and to provide effective challenge on the regularity and propriety of the SMC’s spend and business activities.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of social mobility issues in employment, enterprise and/or education sectors.
  • Research and analytical skills
  • Digital skills
  • Knowledge of mental health and wellbeing strategies.

Applicants will be assessed against these criteria in their application form and at any subsequent interview.
