Time Requirements
The term of office will last four years, and time commitment is likely to average 16 hours over the year for Board Meetings, the Annual General Meeting and an Away Day; 10 hours over the year for attendance at sub-committees; 2 -3 days per month for reading and preparing papers, meeting the director and other trustees; and other general work related to the role.

Vacancy Description

Museum of the Home wishes to appoint a Chair to drive forward and bring to life the ongoing transformation of our Museum, and the place to explore and debate the meaning of home. This appointment, made by the Secretary of State at the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport, carries a three-year term. Museum of the Home reopened in 2021 following an £18.8m refurbishment with increased gallery spaces, a contemporary art programme and a vibrant programme of public events. The challenges for the next Chair include rethinking our much-loved Rooms Through Time, developing a masterplan for undeveloped areas of the museum site, and ensuring the Museum continues to increase and broaden its audiences, impact and reach. 

Museum of the Home and DCMS are committed to ensuring their public appointments are diverse and benefit from a broad range of skills and perspectives, so that the Board of Trustees at Museum of the Home is representative all of the people it serves. We encourage applications from those whose experiences and perspectives are currently under-represented on our Board and in the museum sector.

Person Specification

Candidates for the Chair should be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • Strong enthusiasm for the Museum of the Home and its potential, and to supporting its core purpose to be a place to explore and debate the meaning of home;
  • The ability to chair and lead the board effectively, to promote high-quality discussion and ensure all voices are heard;
  • Good communication skills with the ability to act as a spokesperson and advocate for the Museum, forging strong relationships with key stakeholders;
  • The ability to lead the organisation through recovery from Covid lockdown and future strategic development;
  • The ability to encourage donors, sponsors and supporters to work with the Museum;
  • An understanding, of and commitment to, the principles of corporate governance in the public sector;
  • An ability to think strategically and creatively to help the Museum of the Home to achieve its vision and to better serve and work in partnership with all stakeholders;
  • A commitment to engaging communities outside of London, and factoring UK-wide strategies into all decision making; and
  • A commitment to preserving cultural heritage, improving education and understanding of British and World history as it relates to the history of the home.
