Remuneration
The BPC Chair is remunerated at a rate of £500 per meeting attended, which includes preparation.
Time Requirements
There is a time commitment of three one-day BPC meetings per year. The Chair will also attend meetings of the European Pharmacopoeia Commission as required (usually three two-day meetings per year) and meetings of any EAGs to which they are appointed.

An announcement has been made on the outcome of this appointment.

Dr Anna-Maria Brady has been appointed as chair of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission for 4 years from 1 October 2022.

The appointment will involve a time commitment of approximately 3 one day meetings per year. Remuneration for the roles will be at a rate of £500 per meeting.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Cabinet Office Code of Governance for Public Appointments. The regulation of public appointments against the requirements of this code is carried out by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

The appointment is made on merit and political activity played no part in the decision process. However, in accordance with the code, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Dr Brady has not declared any political activity.

Vacancy Description

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care is looking to appoint a new Chair to the British Pharmacopoeia Commission (BPC).

The BPC is responsible for preparing new editions of the British Pharmacopoeia (BP) and British Pharmacopoeia (Veterinary) and for keeping them up to date.

The British Pharmacopoeia (BP) is part of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) which regulates medicines, medical devices and blood components for transfusion in the UK.

The BP is a vital component of the medicines regulatory framework in the UK as well as across the world. The pharmacopoeial quality standards developed by the BP are one of the foundations of ensuring acceptable medicines quality which underpins the safety and efficacy of medicines taken by patients every day.  These standards are used in more than 100 countries across the world and international collaboration with our scientific and regulatory peers is a cornerstone of our work now and in the future.

The Chair will provide dynamic leadership of the British Pharmacopoeia Commission which will result in the strategic positioning of the BP in order to promote and enhance its standing on the international stage. This includes providing scientific and technical direction to the Expert Advisory Groups (EAGs), Panels of Experts and Working Parties responsible for the development of monographs and supporting texts which will enable the publication of quality standards for medicines.

The Secretary of State for Health and Social Care will determine the length of the appointment, which will be up to a maximum of 4 years.

Person Specification

The successful candidate will be recognised by their peers as an eminent member of their profession and will have wide and recent experience as detailed in the information pack available from the Public Appointments website (see below).

They will possess an in-depth understanding of the purpose and function of a pharmacopoeia and its place in the overall regulatory system (UK and Europe). The successful candidate will also be aware of the factors that influence international pharmacopoeial activities.

In addition, they will possess the ability to Chair a committee/board effectively, be both impartial and objective and have no interests in the pharmaceutical industry (i.e. shares, consultancy fees, etc) or will confirm willingness to relinquish all such interests prior to appointment.
