We are looking for outstanding individuals to become Non-judicial Members of the Civil Justice Council (CJC)
The Civil Justice Council was established under the Civil Procedure Act 1997 as an advisory non departmental public body. It is responsible for keeping the civil justice system under review, conducting research and advising on change and procedural reform, and considering how to make the system more accessible, fair and efficient.

Vacancy Description
Candidates for these roles must demonstrate the professional skills/qualifications and/or experience in the context of the civil justice, relevant to the particular role with regard to the following: • A barrister • Analysis, information architecture, econometrics • Digital technologies, information technology • Small and medium-sized enterprises • Other areas of expertise relevant to civil justice.
Role Description: • Contribute to the work of the CJC by taking part in quarterly meetings; • Ensure that your own expertise contributes to the collegiate voice of the Council; • Participate in and monitor the progress of the work being undertaken by the Council out of committee; • Consider and contribute to the Council’s responses to proposals for reform and consultations relevant to civil justice; • Lead by chairing or convening time-limited working parties appropriate to your expertise; and • Act as ambassador for the Council where appropriate.
Essential criteria: • A broad understanding of the civil justice system; • Ability to adopt a collaborative approach in contributing, at a strategic level, to complex issues; • Ability to represent a sector or interest within the civil justice system, though not as a representative, and to speak with authority as an expert and/or experienced practitioner; • Effective interpersonal and communication skills in a committee setting; and • A strong and visible passion and commitment to the improvement of the civil justice system.
Person Specification
Candidates must also be able to demonstrate the professional expertise relevant to the particular role:
Barrister Member
• A practising barrister with significant experience of civil justice; • A broad understanding of civil justice policy issues is essential; and • A predominantly civil practice.
Information architecture and econometrics member • Demonstrable ability to use data to inform policy; • Strong data analytic skills combined with economic and analytical insights; • Ability to scrutinise current and planned information architecture systems used in the civil justice system; and • A strong technical knowledge and/or experience of the design, operation, or use of information infrastructure and services.
Digital technologies and information technology member • A clear understanding of the effect of new technology in an established system; • Ability to analyse and critique the commissioning, design and development of information and technology solutions; and • Experience in developing joined up design and long-term plans to achieve digital transformation.
Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) member • Experience of the interaction between SMEs and the civil justice system; and • Understanding of the particular interests and concerns of SMEs and their employees in relation to the civil justice system.
Other expertise • An expertise, perspective, or qualification not currently represented within the membership of the CJC and which is not listed above, which you consider the Council would benefit from. If you have such an expertise, your application should outline how your expertise would be a valuable addition to the Council membership.
Additional Information
Eligibility There must be no employment restrictions, or limit on your permitted stay in the UK.
Security Clearance Confirmation of appointment will be subject to basic clearance checks, covering confirmation of identity and right to work in the UK plus a criminal record check. This will involve completion of several paper and electronic forms and can take up to five weeks to process following completion of the forms.
