Vacancy Description

The Office for Standards in Education (Ofsted) is a force for improvement through intelligent, responsible and focused inspection and regulation, and an organisation committed to putting children and students first.

Ofsted wishes to recruit up to 6 individuals with experience of governance who are confident and constructive in their approach, and who can think both broadly and independently. It is essential that they are able to consider issues from a big picture, macro perspective, and to support and challenge the executive in its strategic planning. We seek individuals with a track record of success at the strategic level and the ability to contribute their expertise across the breadth of Ofsted’s activities.

We are also looking to improve the diversity of the Board, and want to strongly encourage applications from a diverse range of applicants, particularly those from under-represented groups, and those who have achieved success through non-traditional educational or social care routes.

Person Specification

Successful candidates will need to demonstrate that they meet all of the essential criteria. These criteria will be explored further with those who are invited to interview.

Should a large number of applications be received, an initial sift will be performed on the basis on the first criteria of your impact at a senior level of ensuring good governance only.

Essential Criteria

You will be able to provide evidence of:

  • Your impact at a senior level on ensuring good governance;
  • Proven ability to think strategically, to contribute to and measure strategic performance in complex organisations;
  • An ability to build effective relationships with those at senior levels inside and outside government and/or between organisations;
  • Proven ability to find innovative solutions to complex problems, to challenge the status quo, and bring new ideas to ensuring value for money in a complex, people focussed, organisation;
  • Active engagement with others, contributing your own ideas and embracing alternative views, in order to reach optimal solutions.

You will also be able to demonstrate at least one of the following:

  • Strategic understanding of policy and organisational issues related to information technology and knowledge management in complex national or large regional organisations;
  • Senior level expertise in communications;
  • Senior level expertise in financial management and/or human resources;
  • Knowledge and understanding of issues related to education, further education and skills, or social care gained from either working on, or as a service user, of children’s social care and/or alternative provision of education or one of the other services that Ofsted inspects.

Where applicants are in the early or middle stages of their career, we will be looking for evidence of potential to perform at a senior level.
