The post is based at the Waterton Centre, Bridgend. Board meetings will normally be held at the Centre but meetings could also be held in other locations across Wales. During the current pandemic, meetings are being held virtually.

Remuneration
The Appointee is eligible to claim remuneration of £337 per meeting, in addition to expenses. Board members (including the Chair) are regarded as holders of an office for tax and National Insurance purposes. Fees payable will, as a result, be chargeable to tax under Section 62 of the Income Tax Earnings and Pensions Act 2003 and subject to Class 1 National Insurance contributions. These liabilities will be deducted via the Welsh Government payroll system and the net fee paid to the office holder.

Professor Keith Ridgway CBE has been appointed as the new Chair of Industry Wales, Economy Minister, Vaughan Gething, has announced.

Industry Wales, an arm’s length Welsh Government body, is responsible for providing specialist advice and working directly with industry to support technology and manufacturing businesses in Wales to thrive on a global stage.

You will be appointed by Welsh Ministers as a Director of Industry Wales and Board Member. Accordingly, nothing in this document shall be construed as, or taken to create, a contract of employment between you and the Welsh Government.

Role description  You will be appointed by Welsh Ministers as a Director of Industry Wales and Board Chair. Accordingly, nothing in this document shall be construed as, or taken to create, a contract of employment between you and the Welsh Government.

This role will include: – Providing effective leadership; defining and developing strategic direction and setting challenging objectives; – Promoting high standards of public finance, upholding the principles of regularity, propriety and value for money; – A wider role of advocacy on behalf of the industry in Wales is expected; – Ensuring that IW’s activities are conducted efficiently and effectively; and – Monitoring performance to ensure that IW fully meets its aims, objectives and performance targets.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria: – Proven ability of leading Boards and organisations effectively.

– Excellent communication and influencing skills, and experience of dealing with the media effectively.

– The ability to network and develop relationships.

– An understanding of the Welsh Government’s policies and in particular the Well-Being of Future Generations Act, the Economic Action Plan and its 5 Calls to Action and the International Strategy.

– A clear understanding of the Engineering, Technology and Manufacturing industries within Wales, UK and Internationally and the threats and opportunities it faces, with particular reference to:

a. Disruptive technologies, products, markets b. Automation, Artificial Intelligence and Industry 4.0 c. Anchoring of supply chains within a low carbon economy

– An understanding of the workings of the Welsh Devolved Administration together with a political awareness and ability to develop political networks.

– A clear understanding and commitment to equality issues and challenging discriminatory practices when appropriate.

– An understanding of the importance of maintaining high standards in public life and an awareness of the diversity agenda in Wales.

Desirable Skills:

The Board would benefit from Members with expertise and experience in the following areas:

– Business, engineering, technologies and Economics. – Data Driven Innovation, FinTech, Cyber security and Digital Services. – High Value Manufacturing, Advanced Materials and modern construction. – Energy, the Environment and the low carbon economy.

Welsh Language The ability to communicate through the medium of Welsh is desirable but not essential. Desirable skill levels are as follows:

– Understanding – Can understand parts of a basic conversation – Reading – Can read some basic words and phrases with understanding – Speaking – Can hold a basic conversation in Welsh – Writing – Can write basic messages on everyday topics

All candidates will be expected to display an empathy towards the language and support decision making to strengthen bilingual service provision.
