As the national mapping services provider of Great Britain, OS provides critical location data and know-how to more than 5,000 organisations working for the public good in areas such as housing, the natural environment, connected transport and national security, and to a broad range of business sectors including energy, utility, property, retail and finance.
OS is looking for a Non-Executive Chair with exceptional board leadership skills and a proven track record of building commercial businesses to support management in driving the long-term, profitable growth of the company. This comes at a crucial time for OS as it seeks to expand its commercial business in new, fast-growing markets whilst transforming its delivery of critical geospatial data and services to the public sector across Great Britain.
The incoming Chair will lead the Board in encouraging and challenging the executive team, shaping the strategic direction of the company and monitoring delivery against agreed commercial strategies and plans.
The successful candidate will have the personal credibility and professional abilities to lead the Board and represent the organisation at the highest levels, including:
- A record of commercial business leadership at Board level or equivalent;
- Excellent inter-personal skills and experience of managing complex senior stakeholder relationships;
- The ability to think strategically, set clear direction and communicate effectively to command the confidence of a range of audiences;
- Senior experience of supporting significant organisational transformation and culture change programmes;
- A record of achievement in a Non-executive Director role; and
- An understanding of the public sector context and the values of public service.
The OS Chair is a Ministerial appointment, made through a process regulated by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
Person Specification
Essential skills
OS is seeking to appoint an individual possessing the following skills and capabilities:
- A record of commercial business leadership at Board level or equivalent, preferably in a company developing commercial activities in new or fast-growing markets;
- Excellent inter-personal skills, including the ability to build effective team relationships with Board members and executives, and experience of managing complex senior stakeholder relationships;
- The ability to think strategically, set clear direction and communicate effectively to command the confidence of a range of audiences;
- Senior experience of supporting significant organisational transformation and culture change programmes;
- A record of achievement in a Non-executive Director role, demonstrating sound knowledge of corporate governance good practice and the ability to work effectively as part of a board; and
- An understanding of the public sector context and an understanding of, and commitment to, the principle of Ministerial accountability and the values of public service.
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience as a non-executive chair of the board of a commercial and/or international business; and
- Experience of working at senior levels to deliver commercial growth within or alongside the public sector, including in a global context.
