Vacancy Description

Members of the Committee have collective responsibility for the operation of the Criminal Procedure Rule Committee. They must:

  • Be willing to participate actively in the formulation and discussion of proposals (that is, changes to rules) in meetings of the Committee and of sub-groups, and willing to devote sufficient time to the preparation of Committee business.
  • Be expected to hold and to express views and to demonstrate commitment to achieving change in a spirit of partnership.
  • It is a convention of Committee meetings that all members are invited to comment upon the papers  and encouraged to contribute proposals for practical reform.

As representatives of key groups, members share responsibility for ensuring that the Committee is informed of current issues and for informing their respective groups of the views of the Committee, current matters of concern, forthcoming rule changes and Committee consultations.

Person Specification

Candidates will be able to demonstrate the following:

  • Knowledge of, or experience of operating, the Criminal Procedure Rules specifically through current active involvement in a voluntary organisation with a direct interest in the work of criminal courts.
  • Evidence of exceptional communication skills with the ability to engage with other committee members to work together to achieve shared goals.
  • The ability to serve in a personal capacity, drawing on your experience, knowledge and relevant interpersonal skills, and not as a representative of a particular professional association or viewpoint.
  • Be able and willing to work as part of a committee, as well as retaining the confidence of the Committee Chair, Ministers, Parliament, the judiciary, other professional bodies in the criminal justice system and the public
  • Familiarity with the administration of the criminal courts, and a commitment to reflecting the needs of end users in that process.
  • A commitment to valuing and promoting diversity.

Additional Information

Tenure: Public appointments are offered on a fixed term basis. We do this to ensure that the leadership of our public bodies is regularly refreshed and that the CPRC can benefit from new perspectives and ideas.

The appointment will run for four years with the possibility of reappointment for a further term subject to satisfactory appraisal and at the discretion of Ministers.

In line with the Governance Code for Public Appointments, there is a strong presumption that no individual should serve more than two terms or serve in any one post for more than ten years.

Remuneration, Allowances and Abatement: The role is unremunerated but reasonable out-of-pocket expenses (including travel) will be payable.

Travel and subsistence allowances may be payable on the same basis as that applicable to civil servants where the post holder is required to travel to other locations or stay overnight in the course of their duties.

Performance Appraisal: You will be assessed annually on performance by the Chair of the Committee.

Standards in Public Life: Public appointees are required to uphold the Committee on Standards.  Seven Principles of Public Life You are also expected to adhere to the  Code of Conduct for Board Members of Public Bodies

It will be important that a member’s other commitments do not cast any doubt on their ability to act independently and impartially in discharging the role; any potential conflicts of interest must be declared in your application.
