An announcement has been made on the outcome of this appointment.

Ian Bauckham CBE has been appointed as chair of the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual). He will serve from 1 January 2022 for a period of 3 years.

Remuneration is £55,120 per annum for a time commitment of 2 days per week.

Ian Bauckham has declared the following interests:

Vacancy Description

As the independent regulator of general and vocational and technical qualifications, Ofqual is responsible for maintaining standards and public confidence in qualifications. With the term of the current interim Chair due to end this year, we are looking for an exceptional individual to take on this exciting and high-profile national role.

As Chair of Ofqual, you will be responsible for chairing the board which provides strategic leadership of the organisation. You will work closely with the Chief Regulator whilst providing expert guidance and advice to the board, ensuring members are aware of their duties, rights and responsibilities.

Person Specification

The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria:

  • evidence of working successfully at the most senior level in the public, voluntary or private sector;
  • first-rate strategic thinking capabilities which can be used to steer Ofqual through existing and future challenges;
  • a commitment to ensuring that qualifications and assessments are rigorous, valid and reliable, command the confidence of parents, students and teachers, meet the needs of employers and play their part in economic development and a successful education system;
  • the ability to communicate effectively with, and command the respect and inspire the confidence of, ministers, Parliament, awarding organisations and leaders in the education sector and of the Ofqual executive, as well as of students, parents and the general public; including the ability to represent Ofqual effectively in the media;
  • the ability to skilfully navigate the political landscape, and a good understanding of the government’s educational reform programme, the role of the regulator in implementing the reforms and the particular challenges created by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The following are desirable criteria:

  • a track record of success in board level financial, commercial and people management;
  • experience at senior leadership level in the education or training sectors, and in particular an understanding of the role that qualifications play in an effective education and skills system.
