Vacancy Description

Theatres Trust, the UK’s national advisory body for theatres, is looking to recruit four new Trustees to join our active and engaged Board.  The organisation is undergoing an exciting process of transformation to raise our profile and our impact as the lead body protecting and promoting theatres across the UK.

We are looking for candidates with skills and experience at a senior level in the following areas:

  • Theatre operator or owner (2 Trustees), one of whom should have specialist knowledge of Scotland and with a preference for at least one Trustee  from the non-commercial sector and/or outside London
  • Planning specialist or consultant with experience or knowledge of planning within a local authority context (1 Trustee)
  • Performer or other active creative professional in the UK theatre or live performance sector (1 Trustee)

We would greatly welcome applications from all sections of the community so that we are representative of the diverse communities we serve.

The chief role of the Trustees is to assist the Chair in meeting the Board’s overall responsibilities, in accordance with their statutory and charitable duties.  They must be able to attend the meetings of the Board, and such other meetings as may be necessary. Board meetings are normally held 4 times a year in central London and there are currently 2 optional sub-committees; Executive Committee & Fundraising Committee who usually meet 4 times a year.

The Board of Trustees offers guidance and expertise to the Executive (the Director and staff of Theatres Trust).

Person Specification

Theatres Trust is seeking four Trustees with experience and skills at a senior level in one of the following areas:

  • Theatre operator or owner (2 Trustees), one of whom should have specialist knowledge of Scotland and with a preference for at least one Trustee  from the non-commercial sector and/or outside London
  • Planning specialist or consultant with experience or knowledge of planning within a local authority context (1 Trustee)
  • Performer or other active creative professional in the UK theatre or live performance sector (1 Trustee)

The other criteria applicable to all candidates are as follows:

  • An understanding of and interest in the aims and objectives of Theatres Trust as the national advisory public body for theatres.
  • An understanding of and commitment to artistic and cultural landscape.
  • An advocate for Theatres Trust with an ability to actively promote its work to wider networks.
  • Committed to promoting cultural diversity and equality.

It is vital that candidates demonstrate a clear understanding of any potential for conflicts of interest between the public role and their own professional activity, and can propose ways to manage such a conflict if it arose.

Trustees are appointed by the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport. Further information on the Theatres Trust can be found on its website at www.theatrestrust.org.uk

Additional Information

Theatres Trust  – Background

Theatres Trust is the national advisory public body for theatres.  We believe that current and future generations should have access to good quality theatres where they can be inspired by and enjoy live performance.  We champion the future of live performance, by protecting and supporting excellent theatre buildings, which meet the needs of their communities.

Established by the Theatres Trust Act 1976 and the Theatres Trust (Scotland) Act 1978 ‘to promote the better protection of theatres’ the Trust is a statutory consultee on planning. Local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales are required to consult the Trust on planning applications for all theatres.

We promote great theatre buildings by advising, funding and campaigning on behalf of theatres across the UK.  With expertise in architecture, heritage, planning and theatre management, each year we support more than 350 theatres, local authorities and community groups to create, adapt and save their local theatre as a valuable resource at the heart of the community.

Every year more than 5 million people attend theatres we support.

We create theatresWe have supported the development of new theatres including HOME in Manchester, Streatham Space in London and the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock.

We save theatresWe have helped save more than 80 theatres at risk since 2006, including Wilton’s Music Hall in London, Tyne Theatre and Opera House in Newcastle and Peterborough Broadway.

We adapt theatresWe have provided advice and support that has helped theatres to meet the changing needs of their communities, including Theatre Royal Drury Lane, London, Liverpool’s Royal Court and York Theatre Royal.
