Vacancy Description

The Trustee for Northern Ireland presents an exciting and challenging opportunity for an individual with a strong commitment to, and enthusiasm for, the heritage sector in Northern Ireland and throughout the UK.  The role offers an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to the diverse heritage of Northern Ireland and the UK as a whole.  

The Trustee for Northern Ireland: 

  • Is a Trustee of the National Heritage Memorial Fund; 
  • Is Deputy Chair of the Board of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, (as are the Trustees for Scotland and Wales);
  • Has particular responsibility for representing The National Lottery Heritage Fund/National Heritage Memorial Fund in Northern Ireland and for representing the interest of Northern Ireland at the Board. The successful appointee will be required, consistent with the Fund’s strategic objectives, to actively engage with stakeholders in the heritage and cultural sectors in Northern Ireland and with the Northern Ireland Executive.  
  • Will ensure the Board has visibility of, and is able to engage with key issues and opportunities that are specific to The Fund’s work in Northern Ireland. 
  • Is Chair of the Committee for Northern Ireland, making funding decisions on grants within parameters delegated by the Board.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria:

Candidates should be able to demonstrate:

  • A keen interest in heritage and an understanding of the challenges of heritage in a divided society; 
  • A strong grasp of the principles of corporate governance, regulation and accountability;
  • An ability to chair meetings, think strategically and exercise sound judgement in relation to strategy and governance and enable consensual decision-making.
  • An understanding of the environment in which The Fund operates, both in Northern Ireland and across the UK, and a commitment to its aims and strategic objectives; and 
  • A connection by residence or otherwise with Northern Ireland.

Desirable Criteria:

It is preferable that Candidates may be able to demonstrate some of the following: 

  • A commitment to diversity, inclusion and equality
  • Strong communication and influencing skills;
  • The ability to work effectively as part of a team, with experience of collective decision making at a senior level; and
  • Leadership experience in the public, private or third sector.

Additional Information

Time Commitment

The Trustee for Northern Ireland will be expected to dedicate an average of five days per month to The National Lottery Heritage Fund/National Heritage Memorial Fund business, plus time to read the necessary papers. The Trustee for Northern Ireland meets regularly with The Fund’s Country Director and attends meetings, project visits and openings. Business in Northern Ireland represents around three days per month.

Currently:

  • The Trustee for Northern Ireland will be expected to attend six Board meetings each year. These meetings usually run from 11.00 a.m. to 4.00 p.m.
  • The Committee for Northern Ireland meets four times a year in March, June, September and late November or early December.  Meetings are generally held in our Belfast office between 10.00 a.m. and 2.00 p.m. One meeting a year is held elsewhere in Northern Ireland and this usually involves projects visits and an overnight stay.

Period of appointment 

It is expected that the appointment will be for three years in the first instance. Reappointment for a second term may be made subject to satisfactory performance assessment and at the discretion of the Prime Minister.
