Vacancy Description

The UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) is seeking to appoint four Non-Executive Directors who will be responsible for contributing to and overseeing the UKAEA’s strategy, and carrying out its aims, within the overall framework of Government policy.

The UKAEA manages the UK fusion programme at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE), which is one of the world’s leading fusion research laboratories. UKAEA works with partners around the globe to lead commercial development of fusion power and related technologies, and position the UK as a leader in sustainable nuclear energy.

The incoming NEDs will have the exciting role of overseeing the forward work programme and working through the Chief Executive to carry out the Board’s decisions. Experience within the nuclear industry or the public sector is not essential. UKAEA are looking for candidates with experience in funding and commercialisation of technology, campus development, the technology sector and in nuclear and engineering.

Essential skills

  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to advocate on behalf of their represented organisation.

Desirable skills

  • Credibility to establish partnerships between public and private bodies.
  • Credibility to guide public sector research establishments through change programmes.
  • Ability to influence networks to the benefit of UKAEA, opening opportunities for new collaboration, business and advice.
  • Understanding of the culture and motivations of a deep-science organisation.

Role 1: Funding and commercialisation 

Desired background 

  • Understanding of evolving the governance of public sector research establishments to realise benefit of UK science and innovation investment.
  • Experience of technology transfer from Public to Private sector, or from one organisation to another, and credibility to influence private sector funding.
  • Credibility to commercialise public funding, including ability to build successful companies from IP.
  • Knowledge of UK government and research council governance around industrial innovation and the development and use of IP and technology transfer.

Role 2: Campus development 

Desired background

  • Experience of funding and developing a university, hospital, science park, research campus, or any other industrial site, with mixed public/private funding.
  • Credibility to develop and maintain strong relationships and networks within the commercial property sector, particularly in technology-related areas, as well as mixed-use and housing.
  • Ability to create financial value through growth of research and innovation clusters.
  • Knowledge of best practices in the UK and internationally in local economic development.

Role 3: Technology 

Essential skills 

  • Demonstrate the ability to operate at senior management level in a technology-based commercial business.
  • Ability to exercise judgement across a range of policy areas and strategic management issues.
  • Ability to ensure sound governance arrangements are in place.
  • Strong interest in and supporter of nuclear fusion and in the transfer of nuclear expertise to non-fusion technologies.
  • Good network of senior contacts within the technology sector.

Desired background

  • Experience of working or interacting with public sector bodies.
  • Knowledge of the nuclear energy field.
  • Financial planning and management, including value for money and cost appraisals
  • An interest in the UKAEA’s areas of research and technology.  Detailed knowledge of these is not essential.
  • Ability to influence networks to the benefit of UKAEA, opening opportunities for new collaboration, business and advice.

Role 4: Engineering and Nuclear   

Desired background 

  • Experience within the nuclear sector or in a similar safety critical energy infrastructure organisation.
  • Significant knowledge and experience of senior management and strategy creation within a complex system engineering business.
  • A strong interest in nuclear fusion science and its potential applications.
  • Experience of managing a broad spectrum of stakeholders including at a senior level within Governmental and regulatory bodies, both in the UK and internationally.
