Vacancy Description
East Midlands Ambulance Services NHS Trust (EMAS) provide emergency and urgent services for 4.8 million people, covering approximately 6,452 square miles across six counties of Derbyshire, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Northamptonshire, Nottinghamshire and Rutland. Employing c4,000 people across 70 locations, we receive around 2,500 calls from members of the public who rang 999 every day.
EMAS has worked hard to develop a positive reputation as a highly effective care provider having been rated as “Outstanding” for caring and “Good” overall at its most recent full CQC inspection, with strong quality outcomes, well-developed relations with their partners and importantly a strong focus on staff and patient engagement. However, these past two years have tested EMAS as never before and they are now seeking to appoint a new Chair in arguably the most challenging operating context the service and wider health system has ever witnessed.
This context presents challenges, but also exciting opportunities for a new Chair. EMAS has an ambitious vision to be ‘Responding to patient needs in the right way, developing our organisation to become outstanding for patients and staff, and collaborating to improve wider healthcare’ and in a new era of integrated health and care provision, they are working closely with partner organisations across the diverse populations they serve to optimise and improve care and outcomes across the whole of the footprint.
Person Specification
Building on the strong foundation left by their outgoing Chair, Pauline Tagg MBE, whose term of office comes to an end this year, this appointment of a new Chair is a significant opportunity to lead their Board and to help shape the future of emergency and urgent care service delivery for a large population. They are not underestimating the complexity of the challenges ahead, but this represents a rare opportunity to impact patient outcomes on a major scale.
We are seeking an individual with exceptional leadership qualities as well as passion and commitment to delivering first class services in collaboration with a range of partners. Experience of ambulance services is not essential, but proven strategic capabilities, an ability to operate in a regulated, multi-stakeholder landscape and the capability to inspire an inclusive culture is important. Also essential will be a commitment to, and interest in, the work of the ambulance service and a strong alignment to our core values.
