Vacancy Description

The National Gallery (“the Gallery”) is a charity and Non–Departmental Public Body sponsored by the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. The Gallery seeks three new Trustees for appointment in Autumn 2019.

The Gallery is a public museum with a uniquely important collection of pictures which it holds for the benefit of all. It constitutes a living legacy of humanity’s highest cultural achievements in painting and is an inestimable resource for understanding the world as we have inherited it. Established in 1824, the Gallery’s statutory responsibilities including caring for and adding to the collection; displaying the collection to the public and making it available for purpose of research and study; and generally promoting the public’s enjoyment and understanding of painting and fine art.

Millions of people visit the Gallery each year, and many more are reached on-line. From its inception it has been free for all to visit and the Gallery believes that free admission represents a commitment to the public which must be reaffirmed and developed.

With the bi-centenary of the Gallery approaching in 2024, the Director and Trustees have published a five year strategic plan , which sets out the following strategic objectives :-

  1. To expand significantly the Gallery’s programmes and activities and work more with contemporary artists. Museum learning will be central to the Gallery’s ambition to foster engagement with the public;
  2. To acquire major paintings and to build up the collection in little-represented or unrepresented areas of the history of art;
  3. To create a National Gallery with digital at its heart, to reflect a more digital world;
  4. To share the Gallery’s pictures with people across the UK and to share its expertise to support regional museums;
  5. To invest in and develop the Gallery’s research capabilities in order to be an intellectual leader in the fields of technical art history and conservation science;
  6. To make significant investment in the Gallery’s staff and undertake a major infrastructure project to accommodate them on a single site, the One Gallery Accommodation Hub; and
  7. To grow income with the aim of being 50% self-funded by 2022/3.

The role of the Board of the Gallery includes responsibility for the Gallery’s statutory functions; the provision of overall leadership and development of strategy. It ensures that high standards of corporate governance are maintained and that the Gallery has effective control systems, decision-making processes and management in place.  The Board complements the executive by providing support and advice while also, where necessary, challenging the status quo.

The Board consists at any time of 12 to 14 Trustees, one of whom is appointed by the Board of Tate and the remainder by the Prime Minister. The Gallery wishes to draw its Trustees from as diverse a range of backgrounds as possible.

Person Specification

All trustees of the Gallery are expected to demonstrate:

  • A love of paintings and a commitment to the Gallery’s strategic plan;
  • An understanding of the importance to the Gallery of fundraising and a commitment, as a leader of the Gallery, to work with the development team to contribute to the delivery of the Gallery’s fundraising ambitions;
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to contribute to Board discussion and strategy and policy development;
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to represent and advocate for the Gallery;
  • The ability to work collaboratively with other Trustees and senior management of the Gallery; and
  • That they share the Gallery’s commitment to diversity and equality, in relation to audience development and employment practices.

In addition, for these vacancies, the Gallery wishes to appoint: –

Trustee 1 (Artist Trustee)

A practising artist with a love of the Gallery’s collection, who has exhibited internationally, a champion of artists and artistic practice, who can help advocate for and assist with the delivery of the Gallery’s new contemporary art strategy.

In accordance with the Gallery’s policy on conflicts of interest, no artist Trustee may exhibit at the Gallery while on the Board.

Trustee 2 and 3 (Fundraising)

Two individuals with the necessary connections or commercial experience to help build the Gallery’s fundraising base. For one of these roles, strong international connections are sought.
