The board meets 11 times a year, meetings are generally held in Glasgow and also on occasion in London and Darlington. Non-Exec Directors will be expected to travel to these locations as necessary.

Vacancy Description

Role of an SLC Non-Executive Director

Candidates will support the Chair and CEO by bringing their unique skills and experience to bear in ensuring effective oversight of the operations of the SLC, as well steering the organisation through the development and delivery of any organisational change. Specific responsibilities of the NEDs include:

  • ensuring that effective arrangements are in place within SLC to provide assurance on risk management, governance and internal control,
  • taking forward the strategic aims and objectives of the SLC consistent with its overall strategic direction and within the policy and resources framework determined by the Secretary of State,
  • evaluating SLC’s performance against its aims, objectives, performance targets and plans, ensuring appropriate action is in hand to address any areas of underperformance,
  • reviewing regular financial information concerning the management of the SLC, and ensuring that effective arrangements are in place within SLC to ensure compliance with statutory or administrative requirements on the use of public funds, and
  • ensuring that the SLC’s responsibilities towards its employees are satisfactorily discharged.

Person Specification

The successful candidates will be able to demonstrate the following essential skills:

  • Dealing with stakeholders in public and/or private sector organisations
  • Ability to think strategically and challenge constructively

together with significant expertise and ability in either one of the following:

  • Public sector experience – an individual with significant skills and experience in organisational and governance issues, having working closely with Whitehall in previous roles;

or

  • Financial management – a qualification in accountancy or other relevant discipline, with experience in risk management, managing significant profit and loss accounts, and managing and maximising the value of financial assets in managing complex commercial ventures.

Desirable criteria

For both roles:

  • Recent experience at Board / senior level in an organisation of comparable (large) size
  • Experience of working in the new digital economy
  • Devolution awareness
