Vacancy Description
The independent Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB) is tasked with giving advice to the Prime Minister, Secretaries of State and other top-level decision makers on the remuneration of senior civil servants, holders of judicial office, senior officers of the armed forces, Police and Crime Commissioners, and some senior managers in the NHS. The SSRB may be asked to look at other remuneration for other public appointments from time to time. The SSRB’s independent advisory role is valued highly by government and the remit groups – in particular its evidence-based and objective approach to making recommendations.
As a member of the SSRB, you will have the opportunity to work on a challenging agenda and gain interesting insights into a cross-section of public service professions at senior levels. You will also have the chance to play a key role in the future direction of the SSRB under its Chair, Dr Martin Read CBE, helping to shape its thinking and recommendations. The SSRB has up to 8 members from a range of backgrounds, who pool their collective expertise to inform discussions.
Person Specification
For these current vacancies, you will have experience of strategic senior management of a large organisation. You will also have some practical experience of remuneration, pay and performance management questions, from an operational or strategic standpoint. Some experience of serving on a remuneration committee, or working knowledge of pay and reward systems, would be helpful. The ability to understand the different challenges faced by the SSRB’s remit groups, and the context within which public sector pay decisions are made, is essential.
Along with the above experience, you will bring strong personal skills and qualities to the Board:
Analysis and interpretation – the ability to analyse and make judgements from complex data, and to contribute to workable recommendations on complex and sensitive issues;
Strong communication, interpersonal and engagement skills – the ability to gain respect and keep the confidence of other SSRB members, members of the remit groups, and very senior key stakeholders, including Ministers and senior Government officials, through effective communication and influencing skills;
High standards of corporate and personal conduct – demonstrate a sound understanding of and strong commitment to equal opportunities, public service values and the seven principles of Public Life, enabling you to act impartially and uphold the independence of the Review Body;
We value diversity and want our board to reflect the communities that we serve. We are also committed to the employment and career development of disabled people.
To ensure a balance of expertise within the SSRB, candidates with the following experience are particularly welcomed:
- Senior leadership and management experience gained as a former CEO, or senior accountable director within the Health Service.
- Senior hands-on HR experience, ideally gained at board level in a large public or private sector organisation.

The two current advertised positions will be available from 1st September 2019. There may be an opportunity to commence in post before 1st September 2019.
