- o £12,000 PA for a commitment of at least 36 days a year (unless you already receive a salary for full-time work paid from public funds, in which case there is no additional salary); o Remuneration is taxable and subject to class 1 National Insurance Contributions; o Reasonable standard travel expenses and out-of-pocket expenses will be payable; o The post is not pensionable.

- Three days per month, ten of these days to attend Council meeting which will be held at the Royal Courts of Justice in London.

Vacancy Description
The role of a Committee Member is to: Members will be expected to play an active role on the Sentencing Council and to; o Deal with complex issues concerning the approach to sentencing and the guidance to be issued to courts. This may be guidance for sentencing particular types of offences (for example, arson, public order or terrorism offences) or for crosscutting issues (for example, the significance of previous convictions, or guidance on sentencing domestic abuse offences). o Members will also need to contribute to discussion about the identification and analysis of relevant research and data. o Members are expected to make a positive contribution to the efficient and effective delivery of the Council’s statutory functions and the priorities identified in its business plans and to support the Chair. o Members will have reached a senior level in their particular area, will have a high level of credibility with their peers and will be able to demonstrate both that they have a sound knowledge of issues relevant to the work of the Council and that they have the capacity to develop that understanding further quickly and effectively. o Members with professional skills or experience in governance; analysis and research methodologies; or communications, confidence and media relations may be expected to attend and participate in one or more of the sub-groups of the Council which focus on these issues.
Person Specification
Essential criteria o Knowledge or understanding of the criminal justice sector, specifically through current active involvement in the field of the promotion of the welfare of victims of crime; o A demonstrable commitment to valuing diversity and the ability to be objective and open minded; o Have a good understanding of both what sentencing is designed to achieve and the issues relating to the impact and cost effectiveness of sentences available, as well as consistency in sentencing; o The ability to serve in a personal capacity, drawing on your knowledge and skills, and not as a representative of a particular professional association or viewpoint, and be able and willing to work as part of a team under the general direction of the Chair, as well as supporting the Chair and; o Possess the ability to retain the confidence of the Sentencing Council Chair, Ministers, Parliament, the judiciary, other professional bodies in the criminal justice system and the public.
