An announcement has been made on the outcome of this appointment.
Defra Ministers have appointed three new Non-Executive Commissioners to Forestry Commission.
Jennie Price CBE, Peter Latham OBE and Liz Philip have been appointed for three years commencing on 1 April 2019.
Appointable candidates met Ministers 17 – 23 January 2019.
Appointments to Forestry Commission are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. The appointments comply with the Ministerial Code of Governance on Public Appointments. There is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if significant) to be declared. All three appointees have declared that they have not taken part in any political activity in the past five years.

Vacancy Description
The Forestry Commission (FC) Board of Commissioners will play an important role in the FC’s delivery. It will set the strategic direction, provide leadership for FC activities and direct the executive in the conduct of business; and allocate resources required to meet the FC’s objectives.
The Board will have an important role in overseeing, monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the FC’s strategy and objectives, building effective strategic partnerships to support the organisation and its aims. It will promote good governance and sound decision making across the organisation.
Board members will work collaboratively, contributing effectively and constructively challenging group discussions involving a wide range of subject matter and people, including technical specialists and professionals. The Board will formulate and discuss strategic subjects in a board room environment in a coherent and structured way, and ensure that communication with stakeholders is transparent and effective.
Board members will represent the FC and its values at external events and engage with local teams to help support and promote the work of the FC at an operational level.
Commissioners are appointed to the Forestry Commission Board by the Queen on the recommendation of Defra Ministers and have a legal duty under the 1967 Forestry Act to promote the interests of forestry, the development of afforestation and the production and supply of timber. In doing this, they are required to seek a reasonable balance between the production and supply of timber and the interests of conservation. In promoting the multiple benefits of forestry, they are also required to seek to take careful account of the needs and wishes of local communities.
Person Specification
To meet the particular requirements of the FC we need individuals with expertise, passion and a successful track record in one or more of: the timber trade; finance skills; forestry and land management; community engagement; recreation and leisure markets; and customers and markets in relation to land management.
The successful candidates must be able to demonstrate the following essential criteria: 1. An enthusiasm for and genuine interest in the work delivered by the Forestry Commission and support of its purpose, values and strategic direction.
2. Sound knowledge and expertise in good governance at senior levels in a large organisation in either the private or public sector, and/or an understanding of working with government.
3. Exceptional communication skills, high level of personal impact and the ability to provide constructive and independent leadership, challenge and support to the Board of a complex organisation.
4. Demonstrable ability to support an organisation through a period of significant operational and cultural change.
