Bryan Sanderson confirmed as Chairman of the Low Pay Commission (LPC) The independent LPC provides expert advice to the government about the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage rates. Bryan Sanderson has today (Tuesday 27 November 2018) been confirmed as the Chairman of the Low Pay Commission (LPC). He will take up his role with effect from 1 January 2019 having previously served for 2 years as interim Chair.

Vacancy Description
The Organisation:
The Low Pay Commission (LPC) is a high-profile and independent organisation that works to improve the lives of over 2 million workers in the UK by advising the Government on the rates at which the National Living Wage and National Minimum Wage should be paid. The LPC’s goal is to help as many low-paid workers as possible while keeping in mind the impact that wages have on the economy and rates of employment growth.
The core of the Commission’s task is reach the right balance on wages through careful consideration of evidence of economic trends and the testimony of individual workers through front-line visits. Across its lifetime the minimum wage has been highly successful in raising pay for low-paid workers without a significant negative impact on jobs.
The LPC entered a new phase with the introduction of the National Living Wage, for which the LPC advises the Government on reaching its target of a National Living Wage which represents 60% of median earnings by 2020.
Low Pay Commission Chair
The Government is advertising a rare opportunity to lead an organisation that plays a role in shaping the lives of more than 2 million workers in British society. The successful candidate will lead an organisation that balances economic issues with wider social issues.
Background
We are looking to appoint a Chair to serve a 3 year term, leading a team of Commissioners from employee, employer and academic backgrounds. Our goal is to ensure that the Commission reflects British society as a whole, and we would encourage applications from a wide range of groups including women and individuals from ethnic minorities and those who have a disability.
Person Specification
The Role:
The Chair will:
- provide leadership and strategic direction;
- lead the Commission in making informed and fair decisions
- deliver the Commission’s agenda, ensuring issues are brought forward in a timely manner for effective resolution;
- act as an advocate for the Commission’s recommendations, representing the Commission to the public, media and other stakeholders;
- assess and manage Commissioners’ performance;
The Candidate
Essential Skills:
- an ability to build consensus and effective communication;
- an ability to influence a wide range of stakeholders;
- an ability to lead strategically in a high-profile environment;
- have an understanding or have the ability to grasp issues surrounding the National Minimum Wage and the National Living Wage and the effects on the workforce and the labour market and the ability to understand the impact on businesses and business competitiveness.
- an ability to analyse complex issues, including financial and economic information, to reach balanced and independent judgements on them; and
- a capacity to work in a sensitive area sometimes under the pressure of close public scrutiny.
Desirable Skills:
- an understanding of economics, particularly in relation to the labour market, would be an advantage.
