The post is unpaid, but reasonable travel expenses can be claimed.
Time Requirements
Trustees are expected to allocate sufficient time to the role, which is likely to be up to one day per month. There are four full Board meetings per year (generally March, July, September and December). Some additional time will be required to study papers and reports as well as to attend events, away days, other committee meetings as appropriate and any representational engagements.

An announcement has been made on the outcome of this appointment.

The Prime Minister has appointed Hugh Bullock and Andrew Figgures as Trustees of the Imperial War Museum for four years from 1 February 2018, and the The Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport has appointed Mark Urban as a Trustee of the Imperial War Museum four years from 16 March 2018.

Vacancy Description

Imperial War Museums (IWM) has traditionally had a Trustee on it’s Board from each of the three branches of the armed forces. The new Army Trustee will be an appointment made by the Prime Minister.

Person Specification

The successful candidate for this position will be a senior Army officer who will have:

  • served or be serving at the most senior level in the Army;
  • recent experience of working at a senior level in Whitehall, including working directly with Ministers, senior officials, members of parliament and the media;
  • up-to-date contacts in the Army, Ministry of Defence and defence sector; and
  • an interest in the history of modern conflict and people’s experience of it.

Candidates will also need to demonstrate:

  • a knowledge of and commitment to IWM, and support for the purposes and values of the Museum, including its public educational purpose;
  • proven ability to take responsibility and demonstrate sound judgement in strategic decision making;
  • excellent representational and communication skills;
  • a clear understanding of the principles of corporate governance in the public sector; and
  • the ability to contribute to future policy and strategic developments with innovative thinking

Operational experience of recent conflicts would be an advantage and help to inform our work on contemporary conflict.
