Vacancy Description
We are seeking to appoint the UK’s first Small Business Commissioner. This is a new statutory role covering the UK and established under provisions within the Enterprise Act 2016. The Small Business Commissioner will enable small businesses to resolve payment disputes with their larger customers and avoid future issues by encouraging a culture change in how businesses deal with each other. They will provide general advice and guidance to small businesses to prevent disputes occurring in the first place, direct them to existing support and help them resolve their complaints about payment issues.
The successful candidate must have or be able to build a high profile with business leaders. He or she must be able to establish credibility with small businesses, large businesses and government to successfully influence parties to engage with the process of resolving disputes.
Person Specification
The first Small Business Commissioner will be able to shape the role and establish themselves and the office as a key player, tackling the scourge of late payment, and improving the business environment for the 5.5m small and medium businesses in the UK. The successful candidate will need to display the following essential criteria:
- Ability to consider complex issues involving the assessment of evidence and make determinations, including recommendations, to enable parties to resolve payment issues.
- Ability to develop and maintain constructive working relationships across the business community (including small businesses, larger businesses, representative bodies and other relevant government bodies) to promote cultural change in payment practices.
- Outstanding communication, interpersonal and influencing skills.
- Leadership and management skills to provide oversight to the small team and SBC budgets and resources.
Additional desirable background and interest:
- Experience of working with or within both small and larger businesses in the UK.
- Ability to understand UK law, specifically contract law.
- Experience or understanding of alternative dispute resolution.
- Ability to be an effective media spokesperson.
Additional Information
The Small Business Commissioner will be appointed for a period of up to four years. The post will attract a pension.
