Vacancy Description

The vacancy is for up to three new members of the Board of the IfA. Board members bring together strategic input from business, employer representatives, academics and other senior representatives with expertise in particular aspects of apprenticeships and broader aspects of the skills landscape. All members contribute corporately to the IfA’s successful pursuit of its mission to ensure that apprenticeships are high quality. The Board’s focus is now on:

·       streamlining the process for the development of apprenticeships standards and improving outcomes for employers

·       developing a quality strategy with partner organisations, which builds on the recently published quality statement on what a high quality apprenticeship looks like

·       building its capacity to deliver its extended remit on technical education.

Person Specification

Candidates will be proven strategic thinkers able to contribute across a range of governance, policy and financial matters relating to apprenticeships, skills and technical education.

Current members bring a variety of business and other perspectives and have high level networks to support delivery and strategic influencing roles. The role involves developing and managing effective relationships with senior stakeholders, seeking to bring them on board and win their commitment to the functions of the IfA.

Applications are sought from senior figures from any background with expertise in and experience of technical education to augment that which the Board already has in anticipation of its expanded role. Members must have the time and skills to contribute across a range of the IfA’s strategic and governance issues.

A successful candidate will have:

·       Exceptional leadership skills, with the ability to work at Board level;

·       Proven ability to drive cultural change, with a track record of delivering outstanding results;

·       A proven track record of commanding respect from employers, both big and small, at a senior level;

·       Excellent analytical skills, with the ability to communicate complex issues clearly, both privately and on the public stage;

·       An understanding of the government’s vision for apprenticeships, skills and technical education, and a passion and determination for it to succeed;

·       The personal strength and integrity to maintain the independence of the IfA whist at the same time ensuring it delivers the government’s aims.

Applicants will be assessed against these criteria in their application form and at any subsequent interview. In the event that we receive a large number of applications, those which do not clearly demonstrate that applicants have an understanding of the government’s vision for apprenticeships, skills and technical education and exceptional leadership skills will be rejected at the first sift stage.

The Institute is   committed to a policy of equal opportunity for all members and staff, regardless of race, ethnic origin, religious belief, gender, gender orientation, sexual orientation, disability or age and it particularly welcomes applications from female, disabled, Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic (BAME) or lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender (LGBT) candidates who meet the specifications above.

Your personal statement should be no more than three pages long and contain the names of two referees. Note that we will not approach your referees without your prior consent.
