- There are 4 Board meetings each year and certain Trustees may on a voluntary basis sit on the Executive Committee which meets 4 times a year. Other involvement is voluntary and on an as needed basis e.g. if the Executive seeks advice on given topics from particular Trustees.

Vacancy Description
We are seeking to appoint seven Trustees to the Board of the Theatres Trust for a period of three years each.
The chief role of the Trustees is to assist the Chair in meeting the Board’s overall responsibilities, in accordance with their statutory duties and the policies of the Secretary of State. They must be able to attend the meetings of the Board, and such other meetings as may be necessary.
The Board of Trustees offers guidance and expertise to the Executive (the Director and staff of Theatres Trust).
The Trust
Theatres Trust believes that current and future generations should have access to good quality theatre buildings where they can be inspired by, and enjoy, live theatre. Theatres Trust is the national advisory public body for theatres. It champions the past, present and future of live theatre, by protecting the buildings and what goes on inside. The Trust does this through providing advice on planning and development, supplying resources and advice to make theatres sustainable and offering financial assistance through grants. Theatres Trust helps people discover more about theatres and campaign for theatres at risk.
Established by the Theatres Trust Act 1976 and the Theatres Trust (Scotland) Act 1978 “to promote the better protection of theatres” and has the powers to acquire or hold any theatre or land required for the benefit of any theatre, contribute to the acquisition of any theatre or land, and maintain or assist in the maintenance of any theatre.
The Trust has a UK wide remit to provide leadership in the statutory planning and protection of theatres and to develop a strategic approach to achieving better protection for theatres. The main objective of Theatres Trust is to safeguard theatre use, or the potential for theatre buildings to return to theatre use.
Theatres Trust is a statutory consultee on planning and listed building applications. Local authorities in England, Scotland and Wales are required to consult the Trust on planning applications affecting land on which there is a theatre.
Person Specification
Theatres Trust is seeking seven Trustees who will be able to bring specific skills. The criteria applicable to all seven appointments are as follows:
- An understanding of and interest in the aims and objectives of Theatres Trust as the national advisory public body for theatres.
- Able to facilitate communication between Theatres Trust, Government Ministers, the UK Parliament and the devolved administrations.
- An understanding of and commitment to artistic and cultural landscape.
- An advocate for Theatres Trust with an ability to actively promote its work to wider networks.
- Committed to promoting cultural diversity and equality.
In addition candidates should have ability in one or more of the following areas:
- Planning lawyer with familiarity of the processes affecting the heritage and culture sectors
- Involvement in theatres as a theatre owner or operator
- Performer or creative team professional with an excellent public and industry profile
- Experienced fundraiser and advocate especially within the cultural and theatre sectors
- Financial and business, which might include audit, investment/venture capital or charity governance expertise
It is vital that candidates demonstrate a clear understanding of any potential for conflicts of interest between the public role and their own professional activity, and can propose ways to manage such a conflict if it arose.
Additional Information
The appointments are for three years and are expected to be made in 2017, to be effective from a mutually convenient date.
