Millie Banerjee has been appointed as Chair of NHS Blood and Transplant for four years from 1 June 2017.
The appointment will involve a time commitment of up to 3 days per week. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £63,000 per annum.
This appointment is made in accordance with the Cabinet Office Code of Governance for Public Appointments. The regulation of public appointments against the requirements of this Code is carried out by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
The appointment is made on merit and political activity played no part in the decision process. However, in accordance with the Code, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Millie has not declared any political activity.

Vacancy Description
The Secretary of State for Health is looking to appoint a new Chair to NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT). NHSBT is a Special Health Authority dedicated to saving and improving lives. It is an essential part of the NHS providing a wide range of services making the most of absolutely every donation – from blood and organs to tissues and stem cells.
As the Chair of NHSBT you will be responsible for leading the Board and developing an effective partnership with the Chief Executive, whilst setting the tone for excellent and constructive working relationships between NHSBT and key stakeholders. You will also oversee the formulation of the Board’s strategy and ensure that executive directors receive constructive challenge.
Person Specification
Applicants should be able to display the ability to lead a Board which thrives on challenge and encourage a culture of continuous improvement, with experience of working effectively as a non-executive at Board level or equivalent (ideally as Chair).
Applicants should also have experience of transformation in a substantial public or private sector organisation with a significant technical / operational mission and strong commercial skills to provide effective advice in areas such as pricing policy and supplier negotiation.
In addition applicants should have proven communication skills with an awareness of the services NHSBT provides and the ability to address high profile complex and sensitive scientific and human issues in a way which represents individual and wider public feeling.
Additional Information
Remuneration will be £63,000 per annum for a time commitment of up to 3 days per week. The Secretary of State for Health determines the length of appointment, which may be for up to a maximum of 4 years.
