An announcement has been made on the outcome of this appointment.

NHS Pay Review Body Chair

Philippa Hird has been appointed as Chair of the NHS Pay Review Body for three years from 1 April 2017.

The appointment will involve a time commitment of up to 15 meetings per year. Remuneration for the role will be at a rate of £350 per day for preparation and attendance of meetings.

This appointment is made in accordance with the Cabinet Office Code of Governance for Public Appointments. The regulation of public appointments against the requirements of this Code is carried out by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.

The appointment is made on merit and political activity played no part in the decision process. However, in accordance with the Code, there is a requirement for appointees’ political activity (if any declared) to be made public. Philippa has not declared any political activity. . She is also currently a member of the School Teachers’ Review Body, the independent member of the Remuneration Committee of the General Dental Council and a member of the Lord Chancellor’s Advisory Committee for Cambridgeshire.

Vacancy Description

The Secretary of State for Health is looking to appoint a new Chair to the NHSPRB. The NHSPRB provides independent advice and recommendations on the pay of NHS staff paid under Agenda for Change.

As the Chair of NHSPRB you will be responsible for working with colleagues to guide the Review Body to agree its overall approach and key recommendations, and effectively representing the NHSPRB in meetings with a variety of stakeholders. You will also use your own experience and expertise to contribute to the effective understanding, analysis and challenge of evidence from stakeholders and wider sources, and monitor developments in the NHS and bring insight on the issues facing the NHS to Review Body discussions.

Person Specification

Applicants will be able to demonstrate the ability to effectively chair high level meetings, provide strong strategic leadership to the Review Body and be able to maintain the confidence of others, including Ministers, senior Government officials and representatives of employer and employee interests.

You must also be able to demonstrate the ability to think strategically, exercise sound judgement on complex and sensitive issues, and analyse and interpret detailed information; and have a commitment to public service values.
